Shingo Masuda and Katsuhisa Otsubo established their practice shortly after graduating in 2007. Although difficult economic conditions in modern-day Japan have limited their professional opportunities to mostly interior projects and renovations, they quickly garnered professional recognition and numerous prizes including the prestigious Emerging Architecture Award, with previous winners including Sou Fujimoto and Li Xiaodong. The ghost-like architecture in Shinjuku, Tokyo, where metal mesh screens serve as thresholds between a house, narrow street and garden, is a relatively early example of their ability to create meaningful spaces using very subtle means. Arguably, their most famous project to date is Boundary Window in Tokyo, involving the conversion of an average two-story house into a photographic studio. The finished building stands out from its suburban context due to a supersized glass curtain wall affixed to the front of the building. This unconventional solution, which includes an over two-story high “out of scale” curtains, challenges the building’s relation with its site, while influencing the visual connection between the interior and exterior of the building. In a collaborative project with architect Yuta Shimada, Little Hilltop with Wind View is an 8 meters high tower and an example of a structure designed entirely by the architects. Thanks to its thin steel structure and baked rubber cladding, it can sway up to 15 cm in each direction allowing visitors to experience the impact of the wind both physically and visually.
