Solid Objectives – Idenburg Liu or SO-IL is a New York-based design office founded by Florian Idenburg and Jing Liu in 2008. Its work involves a delivery of extensive experiences from architecture, academia and the arts in all scales and stages in creative process, as shown by its past projects ranging from a campus master plan to a series of museum prints. With the office’s an idea-driven philosophy, SO-IL develops each project based strongly on a comprehensive design process. Its idea clarification consists of in-depth conceptual studies and solid interpretation of project needs to reach a single clear concept with challenging yet practical solutions for space and form. SO-IL’s principal Florian Idenburg graduated with MSc. in Architecture from Delft University of Technology, and is an Associate Professor in Practice of Architecture at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. Principal Jing Liu holds a Master of Architecture from Tulane University School of Architecture in New Orleans. She is currently teaching at Columbia University’s GSAPP and a faculty at Parsons the New School for Design. Their projects under SO-IL include Kukje Art Gallery in Seoul in 2012, the 2012 Frieze Art Fair tent in New York City, the Linked Community Center in Wulpen, the Netherlands, “Tri-colonnade,” an installation at the 2011 Shenzhen Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale in Shenzhen, China, and an art museum at UC Davis campus. SO-IL’s work has been featured in exhibitions and international publications, and received numerous recognitions, such as the MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program for the Pole Dance adult playground in 2010, the AIA Young Practices Award in 2010, AIA New York Design Awards for Kukje Art Gallery and Logan’s offices in 2011 and 2012, and the Emerging Voices Award by the Architectural League in 2013.
